CHAPTER 21

By the next morning, word about Francis Allard’s suicide had spread across town like fire tearing through dry sugarcane in a high wind. Since Amy and I hadn’t told anyone, our best guess was that Cynthia Allard or Leslie Stewart had put out the word. The first thing I did was visit with Francis’ mother to let her know what had happened, and then I headed for the police department.

“What are you going to do about Derrick Landry?” Amy asked when I arrived. It was a little after seven and I walked in eating a banana I’d picked up after visiting with Mrs. Allard, so I couldn’t answer right away. Susan and I usually made breakfast and ate together, but we’d both hurried out of the house this morning. Susan had left to meet up with Melvin at the boat launch. They were heading back to search the drainage canal. She was determined to find every last shell casing in those waters.

Once I had swallowed my breakfast, I told Amy I would wait and see if Baylor could swipe some shell casings from Derrick tomorrow. “For the life of me, I just can’t figure out what one has to do with the other.”

“You mean the bank robbery and the twenty-seven-year-old case?”

“Yeah.”

I led the way into my office and plopped into my chair. I had gone to bed a little before four and Grace had jumped on me at six, so I hadn’t gotten much sleep. Of course, such was the life of a detective. “By the way, how’d you know Leslie’s boyfriend was married last night?”

“Woman’s intuition,” Amy said, sitting in one of the chairs across from my desk.

“Bullshit. She said something that gave it away, but I can’t figure out what it was.”

She gave a coy smile. “That’s because you don’t possess a woman’s intuition.”

“I’ll talk to Susan about making you a permanent detective,” I offered.

Amy’s head shot up and she began speaking rapidly. “Oh, she said he showered before leaving her house and that’s a dead give-away. The only reason he would do that would be to wash Leslie’s scent off of him. Any self-respecting lady can smell another woman’s scent on her man.”

It was my turn to smile coyly. “Damn, that was too easy.”

Her mouth dropped open. “You played me!”

“Yes and no.” I reached into my top desk drawer and pulled out a detective shield that had Amy’s name engraved on the bottom. I tossed it to her. “This came in last week. I had a long talk with Susan last month and told her I really needed some help. We were going to move you to detective as soon as she found a replacement for you on patrol, but, considering things are starting to explode around here, she agreed to let you go now. Besides, it’ll only get busier as summer arrives.”

Amy had caught the badge with one hand and was inspecting it carefully. Her face was beaming, but it only lasted for a brief moment.
